I intended the spondee(/ /) in the fourth foot. That way it forces the voice to slow down and does make it a bit difficult, as you noticed. I thought that it would reinforce the thematic meaning of their being a difference between the unlyrical harshness of battle and the lyrical battles of which older poets wrote.

I’m not a huge fan of the accented -ed in general, as I find that it sounds overly affected. Although, with the nature of this blog I should probably embrace it more.

Should this be pronounced approachéd? “Approach’d spear-splintered” is really hard to say. I freely admit to having a tin ear for poetry and meter, and I’m not sure which pronunciation works better.

If you do want an -ed ending to be syllabic, an accent would be much appreciated.
